Setting Clear Goals and Roles
Everybody is talking about the macroeconomic situation, layoffs, new jobs, etc BUT I want to share something I think is very IMPORTANT and needs immediate attention.
You might want to take a pause. We are aware of what's happening on the outside. But are we sure about what's going on inside?
Having worked with 5-6 different organizations in the last 4 years across different verticals, I have found a consistent reality:
When there is a serious lack of clarity about what the team stands for and what their hashtag#goals and roles are, people experience confusion, stress, and frustration.
When there is a high level of clarity, on the other hand, people thrive.
When people have sufficient levels of clarity, they are capable of greater breakthroughs and innovations in areas that are truly vital.
On the other hand when there is a lack of clarity, people waste time and energy on the trivial many.
Two patterns that start to show that you're team is not really clear about their goals:
1. Playing Politics: The team/individual becomes overly focussed on winning the manager's attention.
Instead of focusing their time and energies on making high-level contributions, they put all their efforts into games like attempting to look better than their peers, demonstrating their self-importance, and echoing their manager's every idea or sentiment.
2. It's all good (which is bad): Teams/ individuals become leaderless, with no clear direction, and people pursue things that advance their own short-term interests, with little awareness of how their activities contribute to the long-term mission of the team as a whole.
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Whether you are a small team or a big company with multiple small teams, make sure your employees/teammates are "REALLY CLEAR" about their goals and roles.
Only this will determine your growth at an org level.
